_=Leading Out of Turn.=_ Should any person, not playing alone, lead out of turn, the adversaries may call a suit from the player in error, or from his partner, when it is next the turn of either of them to lead. The demand must be made by the person who will be the last player on the trick in which the suit is called. If all have played to the lead before discovering the error, it cannot be rectified; but if all have not played, those who have followed the false lead must take back their cards, which are not liable to be called. Any player may ask the others to _=draw cards=_ in any trick, provided he does so before the cards are touched for the purpose of gathering them. In answer to this demand, each player should indicate which card of those on the table he played. No one is allowed to see any trick that has been turned and quitted. _=Taking Tricks.=_ As the tricks are taken they should be neatly laid one upon the other in such a manner that any player at the table can count them. All tricks belonging to one side should be kept together.
As this is said the good fairy appears, touches the fallen lover with her hand, and he is immediately well again. (_c_) This is a curious game, and is perhaps derived from a ballad which had been popular from some more or less local circumstance, or more probably it may be a portion of an old play acted in booths at fair times by strolling players. It is not, as far as I can find out, played in any other counties. The lines-- Over the water at the hour of ten, I ll meet you with five thousand men; Over the water at the hour of five, I ll meet you there if I m alive, are portions of a dialogue familiar to Mr. Emslie, and also occur in some mumming plays. It may also be noted that the curing of illness or death from a stab is an incident in these plays, as is also the method of playing. The first lines are similar to those of Lady on the Mountain, which see. Lag A number of boys put marbles in a ring, and then they all bowl at the ring. The one who gets nearest has the first shot at the marbles. He has the option of either knuckling doon and shooting at the ring from the prescribed mark, or ligging up (lying up)--that is, putting his taw so near the ring that if the others miss his taw, or miss the marbles in the ring, he has the game all to himself next time.
_=Rules for Leading Plain Suits.=_ It is safest for the beginner to select his longest suit for the original lead; unless he has a four-card suit which is much stronger. Length and high cards, the two elements of strength, are often very nearly balanced. In the following examples the player should begin with the longest suit:-- ♡ A 4 3; ♣ J 10 9 8 3; ♢ A K Q; ♠ K 2. ♡ K 10 8 3; ♣ 4 2; ♢ K Q 10 8 2; ♠ A Q. In the following the four-card suit should be selected:-- ♡ J 3; ♣ 6 5 4 3 2; ♢ J 10 5 3; ♠ Q 8. ♡ Q 4 2; ♣ 7; ♢ 10 6 4 3 2; ♠ A K Q 10. The principle which should guide in the selection of a plain suit for the original lead is, that if there are a number of small cards in one suit, and a few high cards in another, by leading the long suit first, the higher cards in it are forced out of the way, and the high cards in the shorter suit will then bring the holder of the established small cards into the lead again. But if the high cards of the short suit are first led, the long suit of small cards is dead. Having determined whether to lead the trump or the plain suit, the next point is to select the proper card of the suit to lead.

Should the paper be blown on to a line or _outside_ the plan, the player is out; the other player then begins, and makes as many men in her turn, until she goes on a line or outside. Should the paper go into London, the player is entitled to make a head in every space, or to add another mark to those already there.--Westminster (A. B. Gomme). This game resembles one described by F. H. Low in _Strand Mag._, ii. 516.

ENTRY AND RE-ENTRY. 21. A candidate wishing to enter a table must declare such intention prior to any of the players having cut a card, either for the purpose of commencing a fresh rubber or of cutting out. 22. In the formation of fresh tables, those candidates who have neither belonged to nor played at any other table have the prior right of entry; the others decide their right of admission by cutting. 23. Any one quitting a table prior to the conclusion of a rubber may, with consent of the other three players, appoint a substitute in his absence during that rubber. 24. A player cutting into one table, whilst belonging to another, loses his right of re-entry into that latter, and takes his chance of cutting in, as if he were a fresh candidate. 25.

I jumped for it and had him drop me toward the outskirts of the town of Lake Tahoe, and then walked a few blocks, mostly in circles to see if I were being followed, before darting into a fairly seedy motel a couple blocks off the main drag. One side chooses a flower and goes over to the other side, the members of which stand in a row facing the first side. The first side states the initial letters of the flower it has chosen, and when the second side guesses the right flower they run and try to catch as many of the opposite side as they can before they reach their home. The cards having been dealt, it is usual for dummy’s partner to take up and sort the dummy first. There are several ways of laying out dummy’s hand; the most common being to run the suits down in rows, with the turn-up across and to the right of the other trumps, if any. Dummy’s partner must pay to, or receive from each adversary the amount agreed. _=Method of Playing.=_ The general method of playing is identical with that of whist, with the following exceptions:-- When it is dummy’s turn to play, his partner selects the card. _=The Revoke.
The second player is not obliged to follow suit, nor to trump; but may renounce or trump at pleasure until the stock is exhausted, after which the method of play undergoes a change. If the second player follows suit in any trick, the higher card wins. Trumps win plain suits. If identical cards are played to the same trick, such as two club Jacks, the leader wins. The winner of the trick takes in the cards, turning them face down, but before he leads for the next trick he has the privilege of announcing and scoring any one of certain combinations that he may hold in his hand. After, or in the absence of any such announcement, and before leading for the next trick, he draws a card from the top of the stock, and places it in his hand, without showing or naming it. His adversary then draws the next card, so that each player restores the number of cards in his hand to twelve. This method of playing, announcing, and drawing from the talon is continued until the stock is exhausted. The A 10 K Q J of each suit have certain counting values, which will be described further on. All combinations announced and scored must be laid face upward on the table; but the cards still form part of the player’s hand, and may be led or played at any time, although they must not again be taken in hand until the stock is exhausted.
[6] (_e_) If the last card does not come in its regular order to the dealer. (_f_) If the dealer omit having the pack cut, deal out of turn or with the adversaries’ cards, and either adversary call attention to the fact before the end of the deal and before looking at any of his cards. 38. Should a correction of any offence mentioned in 37 _f_ not be made in time, or should an adversary who has looked at any of his cards be the first to call attention to the error, the deal stands, and the game proceeds as if the deal had been correct, the player to the left dealing the next. When the deal has been with the wrong cards, the next dealer may take whichever pack he prefers. 39. If, prior to the cut for the following deal, a pack be proved incorrect, the deal is void, but all prior scores stand.[7] The pack is not incorrect when a missing card or cards are found in the other pack, among the quitted tricks, below the table, or in any other place which makes it possible that such card or cards were part of the pack during the deal. 40. Should three players have their proper number of cards, the fourth, less, the missing card or cards, if found, belong to him, and he, unless dummy, is answerable for any established revoke or revokes he may have made just as if the missing card or cards had been continuously in his hand.
Fowler Smythe squeezed his trigger and the tiny dart leaped unseen across the crap layout. My lift had been way off--it should have thrown the stick toward the ceiling, where no one would have been hurt. Instead it merely twitched the crap-stick, and the dart struck Pheola in the left hand. She screeched a little and grabbed at the needle-prick with her fingernails. You never know how much power there is in Psi until you use it without restraint. I threw the crowd back away from us with a lift that nearly blacked me out, and had Pheola on the wet boards of the floor before she could blink. She had only seconds to live unless I blocked all circulation to and from her arm. I found the spots in her armpit and lifted the veins and arteries into a complete block. A whiff of garlic told me that Simonetti had reached the table. He d been watching on the TV monitor, of course.
In a way, I said. I told them TK wasn t enough--that it would take precognition. And I don t have PC. I had to bring a PC with me. You, Pheola. That s why I m alive. Smythe would have killed me with that dart gun of his. _You_ were my vigorish! We rode the copter together to the airport. Old Grand Master Maragon would sneer out of the other side of his face when I brought Pheola to him. He couldn t keep _her_ from PC training.
Cat-gallows A child s game, consisting of jumping over a stick placed at right angles to two others fixed in the ground.--Halliwell s _Dictionary_. (_b_) In Ross and Stead s _Holderness Glossary_ this is called Cat-gallas, and is described as three sticks placed in the form of a gallows for boys to jump over. So called in consequence of being of sufficient height to hang cats from. Also mentioned in Peacock s _Manley and Corringham Glossary_ and Elworthy s _West Somerset Words_, Brogden s _Provincial Words, Lincs._, Dickinson s _Cumberland Glossary_, Atkinson s _Cleveland Glossary_, Brockett s _North Country Words_, Evans _Leicestershire Glossary_, Baker s _Northants Glossary_, and Darlington s _South Cheshire Glossary_. On one of the stalls in Worcester Cathedral, figured in Wright s _Archæological Essays_, ii. 117, is a carving which represents three rats busily engaged in hanging a cat on a gallows of this kind. Cat i the Hole A game well known in Fife, and perhaps in other counties. If seven boys are to play, six holes are made at certain distances.
_=3.=_ The Standard men, technically described as White and Black, must be light and dark (say white and red, or yellow and black), turned, and round, not less than one inch, nor more than 1⅛ inches in diameter. _=4.=_ The men shall be placed on the black squares. _=5.=_ The black men shall invariably be placed upon the real or supposed first twelve squares of the board; the white upon the last twelve squares. _=6.=_ Each player shall play alternately with the white and black men, and lots shall be cast for the colour only once, viz., at the beginning of the play--the winner to have his choice of taking black or white. _=7.

This lead is an indication to the partner that the leader holds neither Ace nor King. There is only one combination from which the _=Ten=_ is led, regardless of the number of small cards. Combinations from which the _=Ace=_ is led contain at least five cards in suit, or both Queen and Jack. This is called the card of uniformity; because it indicates to the partner that there are remaining in the leader’s hand exactly three cards higher than the one led. _=Simple Game=_ is to play for five tricks with a partner holding a designated ace. If the trump is clubs, (in colour,) it is worth double, 4 counters. _=Solo=_ is five tricks without a partner. With clubs trumps it pays double, 8 counters. _=Tout=_ is eight tricks, with or without a partner. If alone, the single player wins or loses all; if with a partner he must share his gains or losses. _=Forcée=_ is when no bid is made, and any player holds both Spadilla and Basta. He must play a Solo, or call for an ace. If he calls, the player holding the ace names the trump suit; but the suit so named must not be the suit of the called ace. Forcée in clubs is worth double, 8 counters.
The boy in whose cap are the six stones has to place his hand against a wall, when he receives a certain number of blows with the ball thrown with force by one of the players. The blows go by the name of buns. The game may go on in the same way till each player gets his buns. --Nairn (Rev. W. Gregor). See Hats in Holes. Ball in the Decker A row of boys caps is set by a wall. One boy throws a ball into one of the caps. The owner of the cap runs away, and is chased by all the others till caught.
28. Should the successful bidder take both the skat cards into his hand together, or pick them up together, he shall be obliged to play a Gucki Grand, unless he has announced to play Nullo. Should he put the first card into his hand without showing it, he shall be obliged to turn up the second card and play Passt-mir-nicht. 29. The player may turn up either of the skat cards; but should he expose both he must play the suit of higher value. 30. Should he turn a jack, he may either play in suit or announce a turned Grand. 31. A player turning up a seven cannot announce a Nullo unless it has been previously agreed to play turned Nullos, which are worth 10 points. 32.
Brockett (_North Country Words_, p. 221) says, At a fair or market where country servants are hired, those who offer themselves stand in the market-place with a piece of straw or green branch in their mouths to distinguish them. Lamploo A goal having been selected and bounds determined, the promoters used to prepare the others by calling at the top of their voices-- Lamp! Lamp! Laa-o! Those that don t run shan t play-o! Then one of the spryest lads is elected to commence, thus:--First touching the goal with his foot or leaning against it, and clasping his hands so as to produce the letter W in the dumb alphabet, he pursues the other players, who are not so handicapped, when, if he succeeds in touching one without unclasping his hands, they both make a rush for the goal. Should either of the other boys succeed in overtaking one of these before reaching that spot, he has the privilege of riding him home pick-a-back. Then these two boys (_i.e._, the original pursuer and the one caught), joining hands, carry on the game as before, incurring a similar penalty in case of being overtaken as already described. Each successive boy, as he is touched by the pursuers, has to make for the goal under similar risks, afterwards clasping hands with the rest, and forming a new recruit in the pursuing gang, in whose chain the outside players alone have the privilege of touching and thus adding to their numbers. Should the chain at any time be broken, or should the original pursuer unclasp his hands, either by design or accident, the penalty of carrying a capturer to the goal is incurred and always enforced. In West Somerset the pursuing boys after starting were in the habit of crying out the word Brewerre or Brewarre; noise appearing to be quite as essential to the game as speed.
